African Lion Extinct by 2020

I am a lover of big cats. I think they are beautiful and fascinating so it’s very sad to hear that we are at a turning point for lions and leopards. Their numbers are spiraling down due to legal and illegal killing of these precious cats. A charity has been set in place called The Big Cats Initiative to try and save these animals or the calculations show that they will all be gone by 2020.

By the way there is adorable footage of a mother leopard caring for a baby baboon toward the end of the clip.

Help Families Keep their Homes

This topic is old Oprah news but I wanted to post about it as I made my donation today. The more I see Will I Am on Oprah the more I like him. It’s still amazing to me how shy he is with all the amazing music he puts out onto the radio waves. Watching him on this episode showed that most times we don’t need a lot of words but a lot of action from a person with a big heart.

If you missed it there was an episode on Oprah last month where Will I Am paid off the mortgages of two families that were about to lose their homes. I wanted to cry watching the whole spectacular moment unfold. A business executive and a mom who had done everything right but were still hurt by the economy had their lives changed forever.

I loved it when Will I Am said that he didn’t want to wait for a disaster to help others but wanted to help those that needed it right now. I guess most stars raise funds to start their own charities but Will I Am is putting up all of his own money to get this going. Of course these actions makes me want to help him.

Watch the video to see what I think is one of the best moments on Oprah this year and go to the I Am Home website for more information on how you can help keep a family in their home.

We Adopted this Week

This week our family took a step to try and help. Instead of continuously donating to charities we decided to do something different. Living here in a military town our church has an excellent support group for the Marines and their families.

More units were shipped over to Iraq and Afghanistan last month and many of our church members adopt the soldiers. It does not require much just sending over packages filled with cards, letters and some food to remind them of home. The only requirement that our church asks is that we pray for our adopted soldier’s safety every day.

I received these images in an email last month and it inspired me to join this program. My soldiers are Paul and Michael. I don’t know who they are and I hope one day to meet them and give them hugs of thanks.

Thursday I had dinner with an acquaintance that just came back from Iraq. Seeing this third image makes me sad but according to him it’s the reason that many Marines are happy to go over and fight. I was actually surprised at the end of our conversation.

I was feeling sad for Paul and Michael but maybe these two are like the many that are proud to be over there serving our country and helping to rebuild a broken country.

Paul and Michael we are praying for you and look forward to your safe return. My son said he wanted to send you guys veggies so that you stay strong every day.

Donate Hair to Help the Gulf Coast

While getting my hair done today my stylist and I started talking about the Gulf Coast and how terrible the situation is. The impact from this disaster is going to last more than a decade sources are saying. As far as I can see there is no end in sight to stop this leak.  How far will the oil spread? After having to deal with the blow to our economy, how many Gulf Coast families are going to be utterly pushed over the edge by this event?

Beth the owner of Hair Body & Sol is spreading this news. Paul Mitchell salons are helping to try and prevent more damage to the Gulf. Apparently our cut hair absorbs oil better than any man made material on the planet; salons across the country are filling stockings with hair and shipping them to Matter of Trust.

The hair can then be sewn into mats and dragged through the oil to sop it up. Not only does our hair suck up large amounts of oil but it’s all natural baby. Officials won’t have another task of worrying about how the hair will break down in the ground vs. if they used a man made product.

This is a brilliant idea and the word needs to be spread to all salon owners. Let me quote Matter of Trust “ALL salons, groomers, wool & alpaca fleece farmers, hairy individuals, & pet owners can sign up to be in our RESERVES for donations of hair, fur, fleece, feathers, nylons and funding.”

Share this info and check out the site to help fix this problem. Pay attention when you sign up as they are sending shipments to different parts of the Gulf constantly.

Dixie Bickel and Gods Littlest Angels

I saw Dixie and her orphanage on the Today show and had to look into her story more. After the earthquake I went through a period where I felt like I wanted to adopt a child. I still am thinking about it but in the mean time I can donate.

Here is a little bit of information on Gods Littlest Angels:

  • God’s Littlest Angels is a Haitian orphanage.

  • The majority of the children brought to the orphanage are between the ages of newborn and 7 years old.

  • God’s Littlest Angels has ministered to the children of Haiti since 1994 and has been involved in international adoptions since 1997.

  • Dixie has created a blog to share the daily life at GLA.

Read about the children and the rebuilding process that is still going on in Haiti. People today are still standing in lines waiting for tents and supplies.

If you live in or around Colorado Springs, GLA could use your help from May 10th to May 13th. Call Call 719-638-4348 for more information.
