I recently had my cholesterol levels checked and things didn’t look the best. Interestingly my LDL levels (bad) were fine but my HDL levels (the good) were and ugly number. If my body is not producing enough good cholesterol then my long life dreams are probably not going to come true.
HDL likes works well with aerobic exercise which I hate. Ill lift weights for hours but can’t stand to run around. At this point I need to start making changes no matter how I feel. My mom’s friend also told me about her positive experiences with garlic. It changed her cholesterol levels and reduced the strange hissing/cricket sound in her ears.
I too have been suffering with the same hissing sounds in my head since the start of my health issues. The hissing and ringing in my ears started four years ago just before the start of my first migraine. It has never gone away and drives me nuts. If she could reduce the sound then this garlic thing is something to look into.
First off I have to say that I just started eating the raw garlic before researching, bad idea. Day one of my garlic experiment I totally burned my whole digestive tract and was up all night. After reading through a few sites I found out that I was supposed to have eaten half the amount so readers beware.
Another point to bring up before showing you what I think are the awesome benefits of garlic, is that make sure you tell your doc you are eating garlic daily or are taking supplements. Garlic does a lot to your body especially your blood and it can interact with medication. Also
EHow was the only site to mention that, “The health claims that surround garlic are not yet considered to be valid health claims by the Food and Drug Administration.”
After reading many sites here were my favorite articles on garlic and I pulled some of the bullet points that I thought would matter to women.
ü Garlic is considered a wonder drug as it helps to prevent everything from the common cold and flu to the Plague.
ü 1 milligram of allicin which is released when crushing garlic has a potency of 15 standard units of penicillin.<?xml:namespace prefix = o />
ü In lab animals, garlic is showing to block every kind of cancer.
ü Garlic has germanium in it. Germanium is an anti-cancer agent, and garlic has more of it than any other herb.
ü Garlic has been shown to retard tumor growth in human subjects in some parts of the world.
ü Loma Linda University School of Medicine, has identified three ways garlic protects against cancer: by directly inhibiting tumor cell metabolism, by preventing the initiation and reproduction of cancer cells, and by boosting a person's immune system to more efficiently fight cancer cells.
ü Garlic promotes the well-being of the heart and immune systems with antioxidant properties and helps maintain healthy blood circulation. One of garlic’s most potent health benefits includes the ability to enhance the body’s immune cell activity.
ü A chemical in garlic gives it properties that work far better than baby aspirin as a blood thinner.
ü There are now over 12 studies published around the world that confirm that garlic can reduce cholesterol.
ü Garlic helps strengthen your body's defenses against allergies.
ü Some people take garlic supplements to avoid bad breath.
ü Elephant garlic or Russian garlic is a variant of the species leek and not considered true garlic.
ü Drinking lemon juice or eating a few slices of lemon will stop bad garlic breath
ü Do not eat more than 3 cloves a day. Garlic is known to cause stomach problems
It will be interesting to see what my blood work looks like next year after doing this. Check out each one of the sites below for more information as they each have unique information. I really liked The Nutrition Reporter because it dove more into the science behind what the writer is stating.
Will you be adding more garlic to your diet?

Over the past year we figured out that my heart problems were running with my monthly cycle. My heart is now under control but I still have some crazy hormonal days. Somewhere along the line I stumbled across Zinc and its many health benefits.
After reading numerous articles here are a few tips that I captured from the very long posts on the web. I do have to say that it is worth taking the time to read the extra information on the Zinc mineral at each site.
First of all what is Zinc? Zinc is an essential mineral required to help aid in many functions of the body. Zinc is chemically similar to magnesium and can help speed up the healing process after an injury.
“Hormone replacement therapy has been shown to decrease zinc excretion. In a study done in 1996, Israeli researchers assessed the effect of estrogen treatment on the excretion of several minerals, including zinc in 37 postmenopausal women. They found that zinc excretion decreased 35 per cent after three months and 26 per cent after one year of treatment.”
“Excess estrogen can lower serum zinc levels and women who are estrogen dominant or using estrogen replacement therapy should check to be sure their zinc intake is adequate. “ Now I know 35% doesn’t sound like a lot but I take this into consideration. Most women I see that are going through hormone issues feel absolutely uncomfortable a majority of the time. In my opinion any woman at this point would love to have a 35% gain in feeling better. There is also PMS benefits that have been discussed.
The other thing that I thought was interesting is that if you are on hormone therapy or are suffering from PMS and you are a vegetarian your Zinc levels could be extra low during these times. “Groups at risk for zinc deficiency include the elderly, vegetarians, and those with renal insufficiency.”
There are some controversial studies on Zinc and fighting antibiotic resistant viruses. All of the articles I read reference one of the studies performed by the Cleveland Clinic. Some say Zinc works on sore throats if caught early.
“In a 1996 study at the prestigious Cleveland Clinic, zinc lozenges reduced the average duration of cold symptoms from 7 days to only 4.”
“Zinc ions may interfere with the replication of cold viruses in the throat. But more recent research suggests that zinc may owe its cold-fighting properties to its effect on our immune system, rather than directly on the virus.”
On the other hand professionals say that they have doubts about the findings and people should use caution when taking Zinc supplements. Excess Zinc in your body can create some nasty symptoms. This is why you should speak to your doc if you are thinking of home treatment for the next flu season. Zinc can mess with medications that you are already taking and I’ve seen posts on the bad effects of taking too many vitamin supplements.
I always try the food route first so here are foods that contain Zinc. Red meats, especially beef, lamb and liver have some of the highest concentrations of zinc in food. Zinc is also found in beans, nuts, almonds, whole grains, pumpkin seeds, sunflower seeds and blackcurrant. In the U.S., the recommended dietary allowance is 8 mg/day for women and 11 mg/day for men.
In the end I read that Zinc benefits men more than women but with the hormone balancing possibilities, it’s definitely a conversation worth discussing at the doctor’s office.

Keep buying those almonds folks even though they are expensive. The bee population is dying and it affects a lot of things in the environment.
More than 80% of the world’s almonds are grown in California and, to pollinate them, the 7,000 or so growers hire about 1.4m of America’s 2.3m commercial hives. Bee rental now accounts for 15% of Paramount’s costs.
If you want to try and help save the bee population, one of the ways you could do it is by staying at a Fairmont Hotel. The hotel chains are now setting up rooftop hives to try and help boost the bee population and at the same time producing some amazing honey. I’ll definitely go out of my way to stay at a hotel that helps the earth like this.
Albert Einstein once said: “If the bee disappears from the surface of the earth, man would have no more than four years to live. No more bees, no more pollination … no more men!”
Chew on that statement.
I orginally found the hotel bee hives at Body + Soul mag but they have no link to the article. I found a more in depth article here.
