Anne Mitchell Texas Nurse Fighting for Rights gets Vindictive Prosecution

If you have not been following this story here is a brief recap. Anne Mitchell was working for a doctor who had some shady practices. After composing an anonymous letter with a colleague about the doctor Anne found herself indicted and facing 10 years in prison.

Anne was arrested in Kermit, Texas for misuse of official information. If a doctor is abusing patients is that not official information?

Here is where it gets interesting. Dr. Rolando Arafiles Jr has been disciplined and fined by the Texas Medical Board before. He had a very cozy relationship with the Sheriff in town whose life he saved. Had the Sheriff not been a patient would the outcome of this dispute be different? Did the Sheriff abuse his power by seizing Anne’s computers, finding the anonymous letter and then throwing her in jail over a letter?

Thank goodness Anne was not found guilty for her act. No nurse in this country would ever take on a doctor again. Anne has lost her job but there is no mention of Dr. Arafiles being suspended from practicing medicine. Why does he get to keep practicing?

I’m not saying that he needs to lose his job but something should happen until the Texas Medical Board and the courts can sort all of this out. Mitchell and Galle the other nurse involved have now filed a civil suit.

It is in my opinion that Dr. Arafiles could have made things easier on himself and everyone involved if he just would have left the Sheriff out of it and handled it with the hospital. I think that having the Sheriff handle things the way he did made the doctor look way worse.

As a patient I like to have nurses like Anne Mitchell around as long as they are telling the truth. Patients need someone to stick up for them in the tricky world of health care. What do you think?

Some California Residents Now Paying for 911

I’m not sure how I feel on this one; residents of Tracy, California will now have to pay a fee when dialing 911. The fee is $300 for residents and $400 for nonresidents. People can also opt for a subscription of $48 per month to make the fees easier.

The city of Tracy is suffering from a 9 million dollar deficit but is this the proper way to regain those dollars? Will this process kill people while trying to recoup funds that the government lost on its own anyway? Residents are taking a hit again for bad decisions made by our politicians.

Is the city of Tracy forgetting about how much it already costs to take a trip to the ER? For those of you that don’t know here is a breakdown from experience. A call to 911 is still free here in Oceanside but then it cost $700 for the 5 mile ambulance ride. Add in a few hundred dollars for just speaking with an ER doc, another few hundred dollars for labs and a few thousand if you receive any major treatment like a CT scan or MRI. By the way I have health insurance.

When a person dials 911 they already know it’s going to be costly. We have driven to the ER numerous times to avoid the ambulance fee only because it’s so close. Now let’s throw in a senior citizen with major health concerns hesitating to call 911 for a heart attack because now it’s going to cost an extra $300. A very close friend had a heart attack a few years ago and it cost them $80,000.

I just don’t know what to make of this. I mean how many times per year does an individual actually dial 911 anyway? This might be a good idea to get rid of those that abuse the system. Like my neighbor who calls the police every time someone starts a dirtbike or is too loud in the street, pulling policemen away from people who actually need help.

California has to get out of debt but I would rather pay higher DMV fees vs. having people not dial 911 when they need to because they can’t afford it. Maybe the city could offer a refund to those that actually have a health condition vs. those who call 911 and abuse the system. What do you make of this situation?

Married Women Weigh More than Single Women

According to a 10 year study calculated in Australia, women with mates weigh more. After evaluating 6000 women here are the stats based on a 140lb woman; women gained 20lbs with a baby and partner, 15lbs with a partner and no baby and 11lbs with no children and no partner.

To make myself feel better it took me two babies and a partner to gain 20lbs. I think I should show this study to my husband. Sounds like he owes me 20lbs worth of presents:)
