Anyone who knows me personally knows how much I love to play poker. BC (before children) I was a poker junkie. My love of poker is not totally about the money but about the head games that come along with the game. There is nothing more enjoyable to me than to outsmart and bankrupt a cocky poker player.
When my husband traveled frequently all my friends were still single and out partying at the bars. I didn’t feel comfortable going out without the hubster and I can’t stand to go shopping for things I don’t need. This is where I am a total guy on the inside. I would rather spend my money playing poker at a casino and get a return than to blow it on clothes and shoes.
I found a card room in town and started to play during the day. Good for me this was when the old guys were in the room. It was like hanging out with my grandpa and they would coach me. I soaked up the free advise like a sponge and started to become pretty good.
Our first son enters the world so I just shifted to online casinos. Online poker is where I was able to take my poker playing to the next level due to being able to play many more hands per hour but this too faded away with the birth of my second son. Add on top of that the questionable banning of online poker and the game became nonexistent to me the past few years.
That is until I saw the documentary on Steve Young. Part of Steve Young’s story is how he basically waited on the sidelines for 4 years in the shadow of Joe Montana. Rather than get bummed out and lazy because he couldn’t play, Steve Young made sure he stayed on his game and kept his spirits up for when that moment arrived that he could take his spot on the field.
It hit me in that moment that what Steve Young did is what I should be doing. I’ve always had this mental thing that I will only play for money because without the money factor the play is just boring. I realized after watching this documentary that I should be taking advantage of online playing and practicing until I can take my favorite seat back at the tables, which is seat 5 by the way.
A person could apply Steve Young’s story to many hobbies in life. If I stay on my game starting today hopefully in a few years I’ll do more than just make the final table so I’m off to practice. Now I just need a refresher on the whole online casino games thing and the poker laws.

Staying at the Top of Your Game
I think that the thing that I relate to most about this concept of staying on top of your game is PARENTING. I see so many people take it as a passive role, when this is probably one of the most important "games" of your life. I decided recently that I was going to be more active in reviewing resources that I thought provided wonderful guidance, and to make parenting something that I am always seeking ways to improve on.
One day, when my son is grown, I will be able to look back and have a pretty good score card of how I have been playing.
