UFE Uterine Fibroid Embolization

A reader of mine shared her story this week on her success at ridding her body of fibroids without a hysterectomy. She stated that the procedure she had done is called UFE and that all women who are thinking of hysterectomy should check this out.

It was an episode of the Dr. Oz show that sparked this fibroid discussion on my site. I was curious about this UFE procedure because even on the show there was no discussion of treatment other than diet and hysterectomy. I checked out a couple of sites and usually put together my own write up of my research. WebMD has a great page of information on this procedure so there is no need to change a thing.

My thoughts on the article are this, if you don’t want to have children this is definitely something to consider if your doctors are strongly urging a hysterectomy. I personally would rather start with a small surgery than a large one. If you end up having to get the hysterectomy in the long run at least in your mind you will know you tried another alternative first.

It sounds like UFE is pretty successful but there is always that unfortunate person that would have to get a hysterectomy anyway. As usual with any type of surgery even the small ones, there are risks of infection and changes in the body that can be risky.

I just think that women need to be aware of all their options before surgery and it sounds like we dont get presented all of our options. Thanks for the comments.

It is a shame that when talking about Fibroid Treatments they didn't mention UFE on the Dr. Oz show... thanks for bringing it up. Another site your readers might find of use is www.fibroids.com from the Fibroid Treatment Collective. It is packed with lots of information about fibroids and uterine fibroid embolization. Its founder, Dr. Bruce McLucas, was one of the first gynecologists to perform the procedure in the US and his fluoroscopy footage was recently shown on the Oct 1st premiere of Private Practice while they performed an embolization.
